After a seven-year discussion between Mayor Brian and Cumberland native Susie Prater, the village is celebrating a fresh start with the opening of the Dragline Deli & Cafe. Designed to serve Cumberland’s 326 residents as well as tourists visiting the WILDS, the restaurant aims to prove that local "mom and pop" retail can thrive here and inspire new businesses to open.
Honoring Coal Mining Heritage
The Dragline Deli & Cafe pays tribute to the region's rich coal mining history, a nod to Susie’s father who worked in the local mines. The menu features creatively named, hearty favorites:

The Big Muskie: The deli's signature fried bologna sandwich.

The High Wall: A towering double cheeseburger topped with bacon and onion rings, named after the sheer vertical cuts made during coal extraction.
Mayor Brian envisions the deli as the first step in reclaiming Cumberland's bustling commercial past, ensuring the village's future is shaped by locals rather than outside corporate interests.
Securing a Brighter Future
Thanks to support from State Representative Adam Holmes, multiple federal, state, and county governments, as well as the Village Council and the residents of Cumberland, the village recently secured $375,000 from the state capital budget (Senate Bill 450). This funding will kickstart a walking trail and the Big Muskie Playground, which will include a playground facility built in the shape of a big muskie. Village leadership plans to leverage these funds for AMLER and federal Land and Water Conservation grants, aiming to reach $1 million in total funding to build:

By 2029, a second phase of development will bring new sidewalks, improved lighting, building facelifts, and crucial sewer infrastructure upgrades.
The 10-Year Vision
Over the next decade, Cumberland plans to transform the old Muskingum Electric Railroad bed—once used by unmanned trains to transport coal to Beverly—into a 13-mile e-bike and hiking trail. This scenic route will connect the village directly to the new campground at Jesse Owens State Park.
