Zion Becomes First U.S. National Park to Provide All-Terrain Wheelchairs for Visitors

By News Desk 🕒 Published: August 20, 2026 at 10:39 am

Zion National Park has achieved a major milestone by becoming the first national park in the United States to offer specialized all-terrain wheelchairs for public use. These state-of-the-art tracked mobility devices allow visitors with physical disabilities to navigate rugged desert trails, steep inclines, and unpaved paths safely. Park managers introduced the initiative to ensure that iconic wilderness landscapes are accessible to all outdoor enthusiasts regardless of physical mobility.

The customized all-terrain wheelchairs feature heavy-duty electric treads capable of crossing loose gravel, deep sand, and uneven stone paths without harming delicate desert habitats. Funding for the groundbreaking accessibility program was secured through collaborative grants and charitable donations from non-profit mobility organizations. Park rangers and volunteers received specialized training to assist visitors in reserving and operating the equipment during their park visits.

Disability rights advocates and park visitors have celebrated the program as a tremendous step forward for inclusivity and equal access to public lands. Families who previously could not explore backcountry trailheads together can now share memorable outdoor adventures across Zion's famous red rock canyons. Park leadership hopes that Zion's successful initiative will serve as a model for accessibility enhancements across the entire national park network.
