Theater enthusiasts in Zanesville, Muskingum County, Ohio, are in for an energetic treat this autumn as the Zane Trace Players bring the Ohio premiere of “The Monster of Phantom Lake: The Musical!” to the stage. The 1950s B-movie spoof officially opens on Friday, October 23, 2026, at The Renner Theatre, situated at 148 N. Seventh St. in downtown Zanesville. Written by Christopher R. Mihm with catchy music composed by Adam Boll, the production weaves together vintage science-fiction, comedy, and retro 1950s pop melodies.
Directed by Shelley Tolliver alongside Caitlin Staker, the story follows Professor Jackson, played by Nate Kearns, and graduate student Stephanie, portrayed by Kayla Fello, as they investigate eerie occurrences at Phantom Lake. Toxic waste dumped by garbage men—played by Kevin McCarthy and Kerby Staker—transforms a legendary hermit, played by Jay Shaffstall, into a mutant monster, while canoe-patrolling police officers Lee Hoover and Thomas Hoover attempt to keep order. The lively ensemble also features local performers Mayah Dalton, Ashton Skoutelas, Katelinn Kiney, Ethan Rodriguez, and Ashlynn Smith, with musical direction led by Darla Revennaugh, who noted, “its just fun, catchy music that stays in your head.”
The production also serves as a heartfelt tribute to its original director, Margi Wysong, who passed away earlier this year, with Tolliver honoring her memory and noting that “Margi Wysong was a gal with an ornery spirit, a big heart and a bigger laugh.” Evening performances are scheduled for 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 23-24 and Oct. 30-31, with 2:30 p.m. matinees on Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. Writer Christopher R. Mihm will attend the opening weekend shows, participating in a special Page to Stage discussion with the cast and crew immediately following the Oct. 24 performance.
For residents of Zanesville and surrounding Muskingum County, this stage production delivers an uplifting celebration of local performing arts while honoring a cherished community member's lasting artistic legacy.
